Like Kent State in the late 1960's, Hayes University was in a sleepy Ohio college town. Julia Brandon, an innocent sorority girl, was in for an awakening, both emotionally and physically. Trouble begins when she tries to bail her radical roommate out of jail and escalates as she becomes increasingly involved with the protest movement, which erupts in violence, death, and destruction. She falls irrevocably in love with handsome, carefree, soon-to-be drafted Win, who steals her heart, entombing her emotionally.
Fifteen years later, trapped in an arid life, Julia catches a glimpse of a man whom she believes to be Win while on a cruise. She embarks upon a journey which leads her to the brink of devastation. Can she accept the truth about what happened so long ago without destroying herself and those she loves?

For those who lived through it, The Pipe Dreamers recaptures the turmoil surrounding Vietnam, the sexual revolution, and the rejection of parental values. For those who did not, it's an eye-opening revelation of what the Baby Boomers were really up to back then.

The reason why I'm only giving four stars to this otherwise excellent story is that the editing is very poor. In fact, the frequent hyphenations, in words that should never have been hyphenated at all, were so annoying that, if I hadn't been so caught up in the story and the characters that I just HAD to find out what happened to them, I would have quit reading after the first few pages! And, that would have been a shame because this story really brought back memories, both good and bad, of the Vietnam Era and I was, literally, dreaming of the characters in the story (that's how real they became to me because the writing was so descriptive and sensitive). If you can get past the editing and formatting errors, then I definitely recommend that you read this book ASAP whether you're remembering the past or learning about it. Happy Reading! ❤️

The Pipe Dreamers edition by Sandra Gurvis Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I don't remember the author, but I do recall the campus of Miami University during that period. Busted!
This book was a real blast from the past. Don't know if it was picking out the landmarks or the strong details that made it such fun to read. Plus the ending was a real shocker, not like those slurpy happy endings you see in novels and movies today.
I guarantee, THE PIPE DREAMERS will not put you to sleep. In fact, it was pretty hard to put down.
You can judge this book by its cover. Not only is it beautifully designed, but the plot is equally well-constructed. It captured my attention from the sexy prologue (check out the "tight buns" description, ladies) but the suspenseful plot should also appeal to guys.
The author has all the details right, along with providing a strong, believable and ironic love story. Who can believe the '60s are history, anyway? It seems just like "Yesterday."
I just finished this book and really enjoyed it. It is essentially a romance set against the backdrop of an embattled 60's college campus. The characters are struggling to find themselves while being forced to grow up all too quickly; draft notices and bombings, riots and arrests compete with broken hearts and first loves. The story is told in flashback, beginning with the central character a politician's wife on vacation. She believes she has spotted her college lover who disappeared long ago. She is reminded in a rush of her youth and its turmoil, thus unfolding the story.
I recommend this to anyone who wants a great read with oomph -- it will entertain while it makes you think!
Unfortunately I will not be giving this LONG, LONG, LONG tale the 5 star review that the other readers with the name "A Customer" gave it. You know, the ones with the unverified listing or duplicate reviews...Wink-Wink-nudge-nudge!!! What you will get here is the real deal on this story, so here goes.

Be prepared for formatting errors in abundance; the endless hyphenated words are a real distraction. Editing errors are fairly common as well and are damaging to the story as you read it.

One of the things which helped define the anti-war movement in the 60's and 70's was the music, yet this story contains almost NO mention of the songs of the times nor their impact on the listeners. To me this is enough to destroy the credibility of the story as music was the message and the message was heard by all.

Call me nit-picky, but when people say this book was carefully researched, I'm not so sure. For example, people don't normally get hit with "iron knuckles". They are commonly known as brass knuckles unless you bought or made them during the civil war or are heavily into World of Warcraft. In addition, S.W.A.T teams were not active in Ohio in 1970 and from what I can find, they didn't exist until the middle 1970's. Just two examples of less than stellar research.

The book seemed to start fairly well, and then it just seemed to derail and lose all of its steam. The protagonist had a real identity issue and seemed unable to make any rational decisions where love, drugs, her sex life or her beliefs in general were concerned; and as a result, the author had to keep expounding on her ever-changing ideals or her unwillingness to go for something and stick to it. This made the book drag on and on as she flip-flopped back and forth especially where her love life was concerned. I was really hoping this book was more of a semi-self-history of the writer which might contain tidbits which remind people who lived through those times (like myself) of some of the "important" things we have long since forgotten; not so, I'm afraid. In any event, I think you could loose one quarter of the book's length and do it a real service.

Look, I didn't hate this book, I am simply disappointed that it dragged on and on and finished up the way it did. Perhaps I was looking for something else, a story with more guts and less far-fetched romance. I don't know, but I was left with a feeling that my time was somewhat wasted on this one.

Perhaps if you are "a customer", you will love it even with all its problems; but if you are looking for a down and dirty account of the times...you won't find it here. The best I can give it is three stars.
